Doris Leuthard, Federal Councillor of the Swiss Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy, and Communications, visited Samsung SDI on July 9 to discuss ways for partnerships in the energy area between Samsung and Swiss corporations.
She met Samsung SDI's Cho Nam-seong at the company's battery R&D center in Suwon on the same day and talked about energy storage systems and other future energy business possibilities.
One of the seven members of the National Council representing canton Aargau, she was President of the Swiss Confederation in 2010. The day's visit was arranged after a specific request by the Federal Councillor who is on a visit to Korea, as Swiss company ABB had signed a memorandum with Samsung SDI for joint ESS solution development and sales in March this year.
A Samsung SDI official said, "Switzerland is putting national-level efforts at developing renewable energy resources including a major revision of laws related to solar and wind power energy last year. Federal Councillor Leuthard showed special interest in energy storage systems, one of the most promising future renewable businesses."
The discussion was wide-ranging including expanding the range of cooperation between Swiss and Korean companies. She said, "The joint business between ABB and Samsung SDI in the renewable energy area will no doubt help relieve the energy problem the world is facing now."
