The number of subscribers to the data-centered mobile payment plans offered by Korea’s three major telecom companies passed the 5-million mark.
According to industry sources on July 15, the number of data-centered cell phone subscribers reached 2.6 million for SK Telecom, 1.5 million for KT, and 1.03 million for LG U+.
The data-centered mobile payment plan allows subscribers to enjoy unlimited voice calls and text messages and pay proportional to the data they use.
KT launched the service on May 8, followed by LG U+ on May 15, and SK Telecom on May 20. In just one week after launching the data-centered mobile payment plan, the three telecom companies attracted 1 million subscribers.
The number of data-centered mobile payment plans passed the 2-million level in two weeks on June 3 and 3 million in four weeks on June 17. One month later, the figure reached 5-million mark. In other words, about 12 percent of the nation’s smartphone users shift to the data-centered mobile payment plans in just two months.
