Hanjin Shipping announced on August 7 that it registered sales of 1.98 trillion won, operating profit of 59.2 billion won and net profit of 104.3 billion won for the second quarter of this year.
Sales are down 6.3 percent year on year but operating profit rose 147.7 percent.
Hanjin Shipping has remained profitable for five straight quarters starting from the second quarter of last year.
For the second quarter of this year, the sales of its container shipping business fell 5.4 percent due to a decline in freight rates. The container shipping business, however, enjoyed an operating profit of 62.6 billion won, up 66.95 percent from a year ago, thanks to the company's efforts to rationalize its routes and the decline in oil prices.
The bulk shipping business suffered a loss of 22.8 billion won in the quarter, while the company's other sales, including those from the terminal business, rose 71.7 percent to 19.4 billion won.
