It has turned out that Yonsei University professors were supposed to use an air force plane as a private jet charter on August 19 on a “security” field trip featuring playing golf and a workshop. Jeong Kap-Young, President of Yonsei University, is known to have requested the Korean Air Force to offer Yonsei University professors such a field trip.
The timing was really bad. The annual Ulchi Freedom exercise, a South Korea-US joint military drill, was scheduled for August 17-20. It is a national emergency preparedness exercise that plays out an unconventional full-scale invasion scenario by North Korea.
According to The Kyunghyang Shinmun, Yonsei University faculty members were supposed to fly to Gyeongnam on an air force plane and then check in at a hotel to hold a workshop, including playing golf. However, as a Kyunghyang Shinmun reporter tried to interview them, they suddenly cancelled their field trip.
“On August 19, senior faculty members were supposed to get on an air force plane at Seongnam Air Force Base in the morning and fly to Namhae (an island off the southern coast of Korea) in order to hold a 3-day workshop. The professors were scheduled to play golf at a gold course near the hotel. Golf gear and equipment, including golf clubs, were supposed to be transported to Namhae by bus,’"said a Yonsei University official.
“Roughly 20-30 Yonsei University professors were scheduled to board an air force plane at the Seongnam airfield. Except pilots, two more Air Force officers were supposed to join them to give them a guided tour of the area,” said an official from the Korean Air Force.
As a Kyunghyang Shinmun reporter tried to cover the story, Yonsei University suddenly called off the entire trip on August 10 around 10 p.m.
According to The Kyunghyang Shinmun, an air force plane was supposed to pick up Yonsei University professors at the Seongnam airfield on August 19 at 9 a.m. and fly over the Dokdo island before landing at the Chungju Air Force airfield.
According to the schedule, Yonsei University professors were supposed to fly back to the Sacheon Air Force airfield in Gyeongnam on the air force plane after taking a tour of the Chungju Air Force airfield. Then, the air force plane was supposed to return to its original base and the professors were supposed to take a tour of the Sacheon Air Force airfield before going to a deluxe hotel in Namhae to proceed with the rest of their schedule.
