Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors saw their domestic production volume grow by 900,000 units over the past ten years.
Their combined domestic output increased from 2.69 million units in 2004 to 3.59 million units in 2014. Of the total, the number of cars produced annually at Hyundai Motor’s Ulsan plant increased 13 percent to 1.53 million units last year from 1.35 million units in 2004.
A Hyundai Motor official said, “Compared to ten years ago, all of our domestic plants marked an increase in production volume, with the one in Gwangju registering a three-fold growth.”
In light of the growth in domestic production, Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors rank No. 1 among major auto makers worldwide. Excluding Volkswagen whose domestic production rose by 550,000 units during the same period, other major car makers have reduced their domestic output, including Toyota (-240,000 units), GM (-1.64 million), Ford (-780,000), and Nissan (-600,000).
