Netflix, the world’s largest video streaming service provider, plans to land in the Korean market early next year.
Greg Peters, an International Development Officer of Netflix, said in his keynote speech at the opening of the Broadcast Worldwide (BCWW) held in COEX in Seoul’s Gangnam on September 9, “We will launch official Netflix service in Korea from next year. We will establish a close working relationship with Korea’s content providers and strive to promote Korean-made contents throughout the world.”
Netflix is a gigantic Internet TV service provider which operates in about 50 countries worldwide, with the number of pay subscribers estimated at 65 million. Netflix provides services that allow users to enjoy movie and TV programs anytime and anywhere if they have Internet-connected smartphones or tablet computers. Netflix achieved revenue of US$4.74 billion last year.
Starting as a video rental business, Netflix took off in 2007 when it launched an Internet-based video streaming service. The playing time of the video contents reproduced through Netflix per day exceeds 100 million hours worldwide.
Netflix launched a strong drive last year to expand its global presence. Netflix launched an official service in Japan last month and plans to make forays into Portugal and Spain next month.
