Samsung LCD booth shows a lot of various images on 82 inch full HD TV with S-PVA technology

IMID 2009 Exhibition is beign held at Hall 4 of KINTEX convention center in Ilsan, Gyonggi Province from Oct. 13 to 16. The exhibition is combined with KES, i-SEDEX, and IT Convergence, making it the biggest IT exhibition in Korea. A total of 120 companies around the globe have participated in the event showing their new technologies on display. Samsung and LG are leading the global display market, and both companies have displayed cutting edge technologies at IMID 2009.

The main product displayed in front of the Samsung LCD booth was an 82-inch full-HD TV with S-PVA technology. Compared to IPS technology with a 2,000 to 1 contrast ratio, the Samsung S-PVA display has a 10,000 to 1 contrast ratio showing clearer images. Also, several narrow bezel TVs with a 10.8mm thickness were tiled on a wall to make a bigger screen. The world's first edge-lid LED TV with 10.8 mm thickness is available in various sizes and types - 76-inch, 55-inch, 40-inch and 32-inch LED TVs, computer monitors, and notebook monitors. Samsung's slim and low power consumption line showed advanced technology in energy saving and eco-friendly products.

LG LCD booth also shows a lot of various images on panorama screen

Behind the main show panel, three new high definition 3-D displays were introduced - a 23-inch Full-HD monitor and 55-inch 240 Hz TV, which require 3-D glasses, and a 52-inch 3-D display, which does not require 3-D glasses. Most notably, the 55-inch model combined 3-D with a 240 Hz display technology producing smoother and clearer 3-D images.

As the biggest rival of Samsung, LG Displays showed several new lines of products, including the slimmest TV in the world using an LED backlight, a solar-powered E-book reader, highly efficient LCD panels, and more. The themes of the LG booth were IPS Technology, 3-D Display and Eco-friendly Products.

LG Displays exhibited two new models of ultra slim LED LCD TVs. Both 47-inch and 42-inch models have 1920 x 1080 full HD resolution, 5.9mm thickness, and weigh 7.3 kg and 6.1 kg respectively. LG Display reduced the depth of the display by using an edgy LED backlight and In-Plane Switching (IPS) technology. IPS technology has a fast response time and wide viewing angle producing clear images without a ghost effect. These models are the slimmest TVs in the world, and the displays have received the IMID 2009 Best Award.

LG Display also introduced several energy-saving products such as Green Displays, a solar-powered e-Book reader, and touch-sensitive e-Paper. Green Display uses EEFL lamps and Optimal Power Control (OPC) to reduce energy consumption.  It uses less than 1 watt per inch - the lowest power consuming display in the world. The solar-powered e-Book reader consists of a 6-inch e-Book reader and a thin film solar cell panel. Four to six hours of charging can give the e-Book an extra day of use. LG Display also showed the world's first touch e-Paper. The 6-inch flexible display is highly efficient and can be applied to many different products.

Display technology has developed rapidly in recent years, solving many problems of old display panels such as slow response times and ghost effects for fast moving images. The engineers have come up with new solutions and technologies to solve those problems and produced better display panels with clearer and more vivid images while consuming less energy. While current LCD panels are improving, new 3-D displays will lead the future trends. As two leaders of the global display market, Samsung LCD and LG Display have showed advanced technology and the future direction of the display market at IMID 2009 Exhibition.
