Sinkhole is likely to appear at the third runway of the Incheon International Airport, where around 13 million passengers travel and 75,000 times of taking off and landing take place every year, according to a local lawmaker.
According to an "analysis report on risk scenario," given by the Incheon International Airport Corporation to lawmaker Park Deuk-hum, the firm carried out its own risk simulation on 59 hazard factors during the last three years. The number of hazard factors “highly likely” to take place stood at a total of 20, accounting for 34 percent of the total.
The report also showed that three risk factors are likely to take place within a month and 17 are within a year, sending out a warning signal to the airport.
As for the evaluation on the seriousness of casualties and financial loss, 6 factors are “highly likely” to take place.
If the factors are assessed as "highly likely," the death toll can be more than one to less than ten and the loss will be more than 1 billion won to less than 10 billion won. Also, the runway can be closed for more than 24 hours and some of airport infrastructure will be closed for more than 72 hours.
