The global quarterly sales of UHD panels which are used mainly for premium TVs passed the 10-million mark in the third quarter of this year for the first time in history.
With UHD panels driving the growth of the overall TV panel market, Samsung Display and LG Display are commanding the UHD panel market each with more than 30 percent share.
According to market research firm IHS on October 26, the global TV panel shipments totaled 69.99 million units in the third quarter of this year, up 8.0 percent from a year ago and 2.8 percent from a quarter ago.
The growth of the TV panel market is driven by UHD TV panels. The quarterly sales of UHD TV panels surpassed the 10-million level in the third quarter, for the first time in history, reaching 11.52 million units. This figure is up 79.8 percent from a year earlier and 25 percent from a quarter ago.
In terms of UHD panel shipments, Samsung Display occupied the largest global market share of 31.9 percent in the third quarter, followed by LG Display with 31.3 percent. In other words, the combined market share of Korean display suppliers exceeded 63 percent, indicating that almost two out of three UHD TV panels used worldwide is made in Korea.
