The state-run Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO), South Korea’s largest utility company, will export a Korean smart grid system, including photovoltaic (PV) energy storage systems (ESS) and integrated operating systems, to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which marks KEPCO’s first inroad into the Middle East as a smart grid solution provider.
On October 28, KEPCO signed a US$3 million contract with the Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) to build a smart grid system in the UAE. KEPCO CEO Cho Hwan-eik and DEWA CEO Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer attended the signing ceremony, held in Dubai, according to KEPCO.
Smart grid technology is about grafting ICTs onto the existing power grid to enhance energy efficiency. Under the deal, KEPCO’s smart grid technology will be applied to DEWA headquarters' parking lots, offices and accommodations.
