A ceremony to unveil a statue of Independence Fighter Ahn Jung-geun was held on November 11 at the National Assembly Memorial Hall

A ceremony to unveil a statue of Independence Fighter Ahn Jung-geun was held on November 11 at the National Assembly Memorial Hall, hosted by the Headquarters of the Pan-national Movement to Erect Statues of Independence Fighter Ahn Jung-geun and organized by Innovation Forum for Nation and the Association for the Commemoration of Patriotic Martyr Ahn Jung-geun.

The unveiling ceremony for the statue of Patriotic Martyr Ahn Jung-geun, who heroically sacrificed his life for the independence of his motherland at the age of 32, was held thanks to sculptor Son Ik-hwan’s 5-month-long dedication and generous philanthropists. Ahn Jung-geun expressed his fervent love of the nation and independence aspirations by saying: “Do the right thing putting aside shortsighted gains. And when the nation is in jeopardy, sacrifice your life.” The attendees resoundingly applauded when the wraps were taken off the statue depicting Ahn Jung-geun standing in an imposing manner with a national flag in his hand.

Jung Yeon-tae, head of the executive committee for erecting a statue of independence fighter Ahn Jung-geun explained the purpose of erecting a statue of Ahn Jung-geun: “Though more than a century has passed since his death, Patriotic Martyr Ahn Jung-geun’s Thought of Oriental Peace still helps us gain an insight into the formation of the EU, APEC and the tricky relations among Korea, China and Japan. A high school student has recently argued that the only thing that can change social structures and address contradictions is a proletarian revolution. A growing number of young people admire old, distorted violent ideologies and people affected by ideologically-biased historical teachings send the nation into exhausting conflict, consequently undermining the very foundations of South Korea. At a time of volatile inter-Korean relations, Ahn Jung-geun’s Thought of Oriental Peace shows us the way forward.”
