A ceremony to unveil a statue of Independence Fighter Ahn Jung-geun was held on November 11 at the National Assembly Memorial Hall, hosted by the Headquarters of the Pan-national Movement to Erect Statues of Independence Fighter Ahn Jung-geun and organized by Innovation Forum for Nation and the Association for the Commemoration of Patriotic Martyr Ahn Jung-geun.
The unveiling ceremony for the statue of Patriotic Martyr Ahn Jung-geun, who heroically sacrificed his life for the independence of his motherland at the age of 32, was held thanks to sculptor Son Ik-hwan’s 5-month-long dedication and generous philanthropists. Ahn Jung-geun expressed his fervent love of the nation and independence aspirations by saying: “Do the right thing putting aside shortsighted gains. And when the nation is in jeopardy, sacrifice your life.” The attendees resoundingly applauded when the wraps were taken off the statue depicting Ahn Jung-geun standing in an imposing manner with a national flag in his hand.
Jeong Kap-yoon, who heads up the Headquarters of the Pan-national Movement to Erect Statues of Independence Fighter Ahn Jung-geun, delivered an opening speech; Ahn Ung-mo, head of the Association for the Commemoration of Patriotic Martyr Ahn Jung-geun, gave a commemorative speech. Jeong Eui-hwa, Chairman of the National Assembly, and Park Yoon-chul, Head of Korean Liberation Association, delivered congratulatory messages.
At the ceremony, Jung Yeon-tae, chairman of The Korea IT Times and chairman of the Innovation Forum for Nation, received an Outstanding Contribution Award for his work in managing the overall process of erecting the Ahn Jung-geun statue at the National Assembly Memorial Hall.
Jung Yeon-tae, head of the executive committee for erecting a statue of independence fighter Ahn Jung-geun explained the purpose of erecting a statue of Ahn Jung-geun: “Though more than a century has passed since his death, Patriotic Martyr Ahn Jung-geun’s Thought of Oriental Peace still helps us gain an insight into the formation of the EU, APEC and the tricky relations among Korea, China and Japan. A high school student has recently argued that the only thing that can change social structures and address contradictions is a proletarian revolution. A growing number of young people admire old, distorted violent ideologies and people affected by ideologically-biased historical teachings send the nation into exhausting conflict, consequently undermining the very foundations of South Korea. At a time of volatile inter-Korean relations, Ahn Jung-geun’s Thought of Oriental Peace shows us the way forward.”
Appreciation plaques were also handed out to CEO Son Ik-hwan of Zen Sculpture Research Institute (who sculpted the Ahn Jung-geun statue); Vice Principal Kim Bong-hak of Gyeseong Elementary School (who wrote and composed a tribute song for Ahn Jung-geun); and sponsors including Halla Group Chairman Chung Mong-won; Poong Jeon Nonferrous Metal Chairman Song Dong-chun, Eleccom CEO Lee Ki-hyun, Grant Supply Corporation CEO Lee Hak-won, Bosung Industry Co. CEO Kim Ju-hwan, Jinhaeng Waterway CEO Shim Hak-sup, Shindonghae International CEO Ahn Young-il, Eroom Law Firm chief lawyer Park Ki-jun and Neng Jeon Stone CEO Kin Jin-deok.
Furthermore, in celebration of the 70th anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule, 70 members of the youth committee of the Headquarters of the Pan-national Movement to Erect Statues of Independence Fighter Ahn Jung-geun read out a declaration, bringing into relief the significance and purpose of holding the statue unveiling ceremony.
