Samsung Electronics ranked No. 1 in the world's major regions, excluding North America, in terms of smartphone sales.

According to market research firm Strategy Analytics on November 8, Samsung Electronics topped the list of smartphone sales in the world's five major regions, i.e., West Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, East Europe and the Middle East/Africa in the third quarter of this year.

Samsung Electronics' premium model Galaxy Note 5, plus its low-cost models such as Galaxy A8 and J5, enjoyed steady sales growth throughout the world's major regions.

This was the first time for Strategy Analytics to reveal the list of specific regions where Samsung Electronics ranked No. 1 in smartphone sales terms. The research firm added that Samsung sold 83.8 million units of smartphones worldwide in the third quarter of this year, the highest among major smartphone makers.

By region, Samsung sold 15.3 million units in West Europe, 23.2 million units in Asia-Pacific, 11.8 million units in Latin America, 6.9 million units in East Europe and 16.1 million units in the Middle East/Africa.

In North America, however, a home base of its rival Apple, Samsung Electronics failed to regain the top spot. Samsung had a market share of 26.0 percent in the North American market in the third quarter of this year, lagging behind Apple's 33.0 percent.
