Samsung Electronics reportedly slashed around 1,200 employees this year, according to a local media outlet Asia Economy on Wednesday.
The media reported the company reduced its headcounts by a total of 1,238 during the period of March to September. In its IT and mobile division in charge of smartphone business, 627 workers were dismissed.
In its consumer electronics division responsible for TV and home appliances, 590 employees left the company.
The smartphone maker also saw a number of its executives leave the workplace this year. Around 40 executives quitted their jobs mainly to assume the responsibility of the weak sales especially in smartphone business.
Industry watchers said the tech giant is set to further streamline its company in December amid the growing saturation of the global smartphone market and global economies’ prolonged recession.
Earlier in 2009, Samsung Electronics already had an experience of massive lay-off after struggling from excessive inside competition, personnel congestion and slump in finding out new growth engine.
Industry watchers said the restructuring this time would be much stronger than the lay-off done in 2009 as there is widespread consensus that unless the company would not catch up with the fast-changing tech trend, its survival would be threatened.
