The ultra-low-cost smartphone Y6 from China’s Huawei, which is now selling in Korea exclusively through LG U+, is enjoying a quiet but sensational popularity.
According to industry sources on December 25, the sales of the Y6, released first on December 16, reached about 5,000 units until December 23.
The daily sales volume jumped to 500 on the second day after its launch from 300 on the date of launch and, thereafter, showed a steady increase up to 700 on December 23. Given the Christmas, year-end, and New Year demand, the Y6’s daily sales volume is expected to increase further up to 1,000. The key to its success is how far its strength (its usefulness as well as its low cost) could go viral.
The Y6 focuses on basic smartphone functionalities. Mounted with a 5-inch HD display, a 1-GB RAM, and a 2,200-mAh detachable battery, the new model features a dual phone enabling users to turn smartphone into an Internet phone, and a real radio allowing users to enjoy radio programming without consuming battery power.
In particular, the Y6 attracted consumer attention even before its launch, since its market price was set at 154,000 won, the lowest among smartphones available in Korea.
