The National Assembly of South Korea passed the ‘Prevention of Nuts Incident Act’, framed as amendments to the Aviation Security Law, in the plenary session on Dec. 28. The act, designed to strengthen punishment for onboard tantrums, gained an overwhelming approval, drawing 192 votes in favor and 1 abstention from 193 attendees.
In accordance with the act, anyone who obstructs the work of flight attendants by using social rank or power will be sentenced to five years in prison or a fine not exceeding 50 million won. Anyone who makes an onboard disturbance or doing harm after taking alcohol or drugs will be punished with a fine not exceeding 10 million won.
Last December, former Korean Air vice president Cho Hyun-ah ordered a flight attendant off over how she was served nuts, returning the plane that was taxing from an airport in the Unites States, a notorious incident known as ‘nut rage’ or ‘nuts incident’ which led to the creation of the ‘Prevention of Nuts Incident Act.’
