The Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) has released a report titled ‘Latest IT Trends Seen through the movie Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.’

KISTI researcher Jeong Han-min said: “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation is ideal for us to get a glimpse of the latest trends in the IT world.” The report is focused on six tech-heavy scenes of the movie, which let viewers vicariously experience five whizzy new IT technologies – biometric authentication, bendable and transparent displays, wearables, information protection and 3D scanning and printing.

# Scene1
Whilst reporting to an IMF substation, Ethan Hunt falls into a trap set up by the Syndicate (an International rogue organization); he is knocked unconscious by gas and is abducted.
(biometric authentication and display technologies)

# Scene 2
Invited by Ethan, former colleague Benji Dunn infiltrates the Vienna State Opera.
(biometric authentication, display and information security technologies)

# Scene 3
Ilsa Faust explains the security system of an ultra-secure Moroccan power plant complete with a gate analysis security system; Benji goes through a security checkup at the Moroccan power plant.
(biometric authentication, wearables, information security and 3D scanning and printing technologies)

# Scene 4
The British Minister is abducted. With the British Prime Minister's biometrics (finger and voice prints), Ethan unlocks an encrypted British-government red box.

# Scene 5

Solomon Lane, the leader of the Syndicate, has a timed bomb strapped to Benji and sends him to the restaurant where Ethan waits for Benji. Benji is also wearing smart contact lenses. (wearable technology)

# Scene 6
Ethan finds himself in a high-speed motorcycle chase on the hills of Morocco.
(biometric authentication)

Biometric authentication technology appears in the film most frequently. Fingerprints, palm or finger vein patterns, iris features, voice or face patterns and gait features are used for biometric authentication.

Then comes advanced display technology. When Ethan receives his new mission from the Impossible Missions Force (IMF), volumetric 3D display technology appears. A transparent display is used as a palm scanner. Benji uses a bendable display that can roll up like a sheet of paper. Samsung Electronics has already unveiled transparent and flexible display prototypes.

Wearable technology comes in many forms: smart glasses, smart suits and smart contact lenses. In particular, to hack into the security system of the ultra-secure Moroccan power plant, Ethan holds his breath for three minutes, wearing a smart suit. Solomon makes Benji wear smart contact lenses and gives an ultimatum to Ethan through Benji.

Wearable technology is fast becoming a reality: global IT giants like Samsung, Apple and LG rolled out smartphones, smart watches, smart bands, etc.

On the information security front, the film also features encrypted voice calls and electronic key management. A person’s face is 3D scanned and 3D printed into a rubber mask at ultra high speed.

Koreans say you can see as much as you know. The more you know the more interesting the movie becomes. Why don’t you watch Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation again
