Apple is reportedly running a secret task-force team to develop virtual reality and augmented reality technologies, according to multiple news reports.

According to the latest report from Financial Times, the Cupertino-based tech firm recently hired Doug Bowman, a professor of Virginia Tech computer science, who is an expert in virtual reality. He had an experience of working for Microsoft's augmented reality headset HoloLens project.

Another tech media BGR reported that although the firm is not launching a new virtual reality product anytime soon, the company includes virtual reality and augmented reality in its plan, quoting investment firm Piper Jaffray’s analyst Gene Munster.

"The analyst believes that Apple will extend its Made for iPhone accessory certification program to include VR headset makers in the next two years. Even without official Apple support, these manufacturers are expected to release iPhone-ready VR headsets this fall,” according to BGR.

“Although it’s too early to say what the transition to VR/MR will mean to Apple’s model, we are confident Apple will be a significant player in creating the next computing paradigm,” Munster was quoted as saying by the news report.

Apple’s chief executive Tim Cook also showed its willingness to jump into the market, by saying in a recent conference call, "In terms of VR, I don't think it's a niche. It's really cool and has some interesting applications."

Apple's rival Samsung Electronics is also spurring the development of virtual reality technologies in partnership with Oculus. It has recently unveiled Gear 360, which is able to produce virtual reality content along with Gear VR at the Mobile World Congress.

Koh Dong-jin, Samsung Electronics' mobile business division chief said, "When virtual reality cameras are commercially distributed, there will be a huge amount of contents."
