On July 19, the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) successfully installed the No.3 nuclear reactor at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and set about electro-mechanical works.
As of the end of June, the construction of the BNPP’s four nuclear reactors was 66 percent complete. The No.1 nuclear reactor is going through hot functional testing (HFT) in its trial run. By 2020, all of the four nuclear reactors will be completely built.
The No. 3 reactor installation ceremony was attended by H.E Saeed Eid Al Ghafli, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, Mohamed Al Hammadi, CEO of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), Park Kang-Ho, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the UAE, etc.
Also present were representatives from main contractor KEPCO and companies participating in the UAE’s nuclear energy project, such as Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), KEPCO E&C, KEPCO Nuclear Fuel Company, KEPCO KPS, Doosan Heavy Industries and Hyundai Engineering & Construction.
KEPCO CEO Cho Hwan-eik said, “We are committed to building the world’s strongest "safety first" culture at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant. Various safety education programs and thorough supervision and monitoring procedures have been put in place to maintain the highest safety and healthcare standards under unfavorable environmental circumstances in the UAE.”
