Samsung Electronics is very close to hitting a home run on the global mobile telecommunication market by dominating the next telecommunication service, which is mobile wireless broadband internet (WiBro) and Long Term Evolution (LTE). More specifically, Samsung Electronics succeeded in commercializing their fourth generation mobile telecommunications LTE device. This particular unique device, LTE terminal GT-B3710, will go to market through a noted telecommunications company called TeliaSonera. The company offers services in the Nordic and Baltic countries, the emerging markets of Eurasia, including Russia and Turkey, and in Spain.
According to Samsung, GT-B3710 is used as a USB dongle that can be plugged into any notebook, PC, or netbook. It is loaded with the Kalmia LTE modem chip, which is Samsung developed completely in-house. The 3GPP LTE is manufactured with the newest standardized technology of 3GPP LTE release 8.
Mr. Lee, a representative from Samsung Electronics, stated on the 14th that TeliaSonera will have a head start on providing Samsung's LTE terminal on a global basis. This introduction of the LTE terminal is significant because in the past, terminal manufacturing firms ran tests of this device with the global mobile telecommunication companies. However, it is the first to ever provide services towards customers.
TeliaSonera will begin using its 4G service in Stockholm, Sweden and Oslo, Norway. Samsung's conclusion of the contract with TeliaSonera serves as a breakthrough to Samsung because it provides a step closer to being the leading global telecommunication company. Moreover, early next year, Samsung will start to actively provide an upgraded version of the terminal that gives service to several updated technologies - the fourth generation LTE, third generation HSPA, and 2.5 generation EDGE.
In the wake of WiBro, and as soon as LTE hits the market, fourth generation mobile technologies and their counterpart markets will voraciously fight to gain control of the telecommunicating market. Such counterparts will be LG Telecom, SK Telecom, and KT network. These three domestic companies have already started the ignition on developing their own LTE service.
However, it is still a long road for the LTE terminal-based mobile to become fully commercialized, because most of the mobile manufacturers will not immediately release the next generation mobile services, but instead will first test the USB dongle. Domestic telecommunication companies will not even consider showing the new LTE terminal unless they see the bigger picture of mobile market trends.
