The Korea Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS), a consumer safety watchdog under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, has requested Samsung Electronics to report the result of its investigation into Galaxy Note 7 explosions.
On August 31, the KATS asked the Korean electronics giant to report the result of its investigation into the cause of the reported explosions as Samsung delayed Galaxy Note 7 shipments in South Korea for testing.
A KATS official said: “We can carry out additional testing on our own depending on Samsung Electronics’ test results. As the situation requires immediate attention, we expect Samsung will release its test results in a speedy manner.”
If it were confirmed that the fires had been caused by a product defect, Samsung would voluntarily recall affected Note 7 phones or the KATS could order or recommend a recall.
Samsung has seen robust sales of its latest phablet, launched on August 2; preorders for its latest Galaxy Note 7 smartphone exceeded 400,000 units on its home turf. Since August 24, however, there have been a series of reports of fires in and outside the nation.
Samsung Electronics halted Galaxy Not 7 shipments in South Korea earlier this week. Samsung said, “We are doing additional quality control tests, so there is a delay in shipments.”
