Renault Samsung Motor, a spokesperson for the comapny stated, "eco ACTION" program will continue as long as the company exists as part of its sustainable management."
The program wants to focus on a healthier planet by reducing C02 emissions to prevent global warming. South Korea car pollution accounts for about 20 percent of the nation's green house emissions.
The first stage focuses on an eco-friendly driving culture, by encouraging the local drivers to drive in a more eco-friendly way.
The first project is called "Empty Your Car Trunk" this means to unload unnecesary items from vehicles to reduce excessive fuel consumption.
An export stated, "Driving with 10 kilograms less in the trunk, a driver can save 16 liters of gasoline per 10,000 kilometers. Currently some 16 million vehicles are registered here as of last year, which means a total of 410 billion won ($346 million) could be saved should all local vehicles join the campaign."
Chun Young-hwan, head of the carmaker's social contribution department said, "Now we are just taking baby steps. We might not see any immediate effect on consumers, but responses were positive from those who understood the program's intent." "Slow and steady will win in the end."
