The Robotic Surgery Center (Director: Moon Hye-Sung, Prof. of Obstetrics and Gynecology) of Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital (Director: Ryu Kyung-ha) has recently surpassed 500 cases of single-site robotic surgery to become the medical institution that has performed the largest number of single-site robotic surgery procedures in the world.
The commemorative event to mark 500 cases of single-site robotic surgery, held on May 10 at the multi-purpose room of Ewha Womans University Cancer Center for Women, was attended by a multitude of center staff such as: Moon Hye-Sung, director of The Robotic Surgery Center; Jung Kyung-a and Lee Sa-ra, professors of Obstetrics and Gynecology; Lee Ryeong-a, Kwon Hyeong-joo, and Lee Hui-seong, professors of Surgery; Kim Gwang-hyeon and Song Wan, professors of Urology.
Director Moon said, "Despite being a late runner in the field of robot-assisted surgery in Korea, we were able to become the world’s top medical institution in the number of single-site robotic surgery cases performed, thanks to our extensive experience in laparoscopic surgery and the specialization tailored to the latest trends.” “Based on years of experience and know-how, we will continue to strive to expand the area where single site robotic surgery can be applied," she added.
Since Prof. of Obstetrics and Gynecology Moon Hye-Sung took office, The Robotic Surgery Center of Ewha Womans Univ. Mokdong Hospital, which was established in 2009, has been leading the field of robot-assisted surgery by specializing in single-site robotic surgery with less pain and scarring for an increasing number of young female patients with gynecologic tumors.
In contrast to conventional robotic surgery which usually requires three or four incisions in the patient's abdomen, single-site robotic surgery is a highly sophisticated and state-of-the-art operation that makes only one hole around the navel to insert all the surgical instruments into the body. This procedure, compared to traditional robotic surgery, leaves fewer scars with a shorter recovery period and shorter hospital stay and costs a lot less because of the relatively low costs of the surgical instruments used—all the factors that lead to higher satisfaction among the patients who underwent the high-tech surgery. In a survey of 134 patients who received single-site robotic surgery at the center, 56% of the respondents stated that they were very satisfied and 32.8% generally satisfied, which shows a very high level of satisfaction with the robot-assisted procedure. In addition, 47.8% of the patients replied that single-site robotic surgery was safe and they were willing to recommend the procedure for others, and 61.1% said they suffered relatively moderate postoperative pain with the pain scale range of 3-5 (1-10, a higher number means a severer pain).
In fact, 56% of the 134 patients who received single-site robotic surgery at the center were very satisfied with the operation, and 32.8% were generally satisfied with the operation. In addition, 47.8% of the patients reported that single-site robotic surgery was safe and recommended for others, and 61.1% had a low postoperative pain score (1 to 10, severe pain as the number increased), ranging from 3 to 5 .
The robotic surgery center of Mokdong Hospital of the University of Daejeon has been conducting invitations for minimally invasive surgery and robotic surgery in various parts of the world based on its experience of operation. I have been actively engaged in academic activities such as publication of the official journal of the American Academy of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Based on its extensive experience, The Robotic Surgery Center has been conducting surgical demonstrations and delivering special lectures in various parts of the world, being invited to conferences relating to minimally invasive surgery and robotic surgery. Recently, the professors Moon Hye-Sung, Jung Kyung-a, and Lee Sa-ra have been actively engaged in academic activities, with their thesis on guidelines for conducting uterine myomectomy published in the official journal of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL).
