Today, the notion of uncertainty is prevalent in international society. In recent years, the world has witnessed emerging challenges of neo-isolationlism in the realm of peace and security; the decline of the European Union (EU) followed by Brexit, and a spreading support for national protectionism, deterioration of foreign relation between South Korea and China due to the deployment of THAAD, and rising geopolitical tensions in Northeast Asia.

Therefore, the desire for “Perpetual Peace”is in dire need within international community where stability is becoming more difficult to find.

In his first message as UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, made an appeal as to‘why peace matters’in his New Year’s address.
He stated“On this New Year’s Day, I ask all of you to join me in making one shared New Year’s resolution: Let us resolve to put peace first. Let us make 2017 a year in which we all – citizens, governments, leaders – strive to overcome our differences. From solidarity and compassion in our daily lives, to dialogue and respect across political divides. From ceasefires on the battlefield, to compromise at the negotiating table to reach political solutions. Peace must be our goal and our guide.”

As the UN Secretary-General stresses the importance of peace by elucidating peace as “our goal and our guide,”the Master’s Degree in the United Nations and the Art of Peace program is gaining much attention. It is jointly run by the United Nations, in partnership with an international organization and a prestigious university.

On October 14, 2016, Kyung Hee University (KHU), the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), and the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to launch a Master's degree on the UN and the Art of Peace.

Built on the experiences and expertise developed by UNITAR, WFUNA and Kyung Hee University (unpeace.khu.ac.kr), this degree aims to train future experts on peace as it explores the different facets of the actions undertaken in the international field to promote, preserve and defend peace.

WFUNAs’ Secretary-General, Bonian Golmohammadi, emphasized that“the core competence of the 21st century is the ability to understand different cultures and solve problems through mutual cooperation. It is very important for an individual to fulfill his or her responsibilities and roles in order to create a peaceful world.”

In order to achieve this goal, Master’s degree in the United Nations and the Art of Peace seeks to position itself as an expert program that contributes to world peace by providing an advanced education based on theoretical and empirical knowledge of the partnering organizations, and by training young people to contribute to world peace in various fields.

It is expected that this initiative, although still small, will become a catalyst for the virtuous cycle that helps the current generation to bequeath a peaceful world to future generations.
