International Data Corporation (IDC) recently reported that domestic voice over internet protocol (VoIP) service market, except wholesale, has grown since 2008 to 2009 and is still escalating. More specifically, its revenue has increased from kRW279.1 billion in 2008 to KRW469.3 billion in 2009. And its compound annual growth rate (CAGR) is likely to rise to 37.2 percent after the next five years, yielding roughly KRW1.14 trillion by 2013.
"Since number portability took effect, many telecommunication companies including KT have strived to expand the service market for homes and this has led to a significant growth in VoIP service market," said Kim Young-wook, researcher at Korea IDC. However, he disputed that our major progress did not come from the users' recognition of internet phones, but their preference on lowering the cost by the expansion of transferring to triple play service or quadruple play service. He concluded by saying, “Such growth will continue on while home phone market radically drops off.”
