On February 23, 2010, CEWIT Korea, a new research institute was opened in Incheon Songdo International City (also known as New Songdo City). The institute is going to focus on improving current IT related technology and building new cutting-edge electronic technology.
This institute will be a branch of New York State Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT), located in Stonybrook, New York. This research center is run by the State University of New York at Stonybrook and specializes in research on radio and information communications. The main laboratory is located in Long Island and has over 400 researchers.
CEWIT Korea will employ 45 researchers, with some researchers coming from the United States. Oh Myung, the current president of Konkuk University and a former science minister has been named the Head of the Board. As the new chairman of the research institute, he stated, "Electronics and radios will be our primary focus. Through this institute, we expect to strongly develop our country's IT and progress forward.
During the welcoming speech, Ahn Sang Soo, Incheon's mayor, stated, "With America's ongoing new and original technology and Korea's amazing applications, we can provide ourselves with an enormous opportunity."
Kwon Pyung Oh, head of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy stated, "Our ministry will do everything in its power to help establish CEWIT Korea as a new economic growth engine."
