This is the first flight since the cargo crash in 2011.

Asiana Airlines will resume transportation of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles for the first time since its cargo crash in 2011.

According to ‘The Asia Business Daily’, Asiana Airlines will ship lithium-ion batteries for three months until June, with their first departure from Incheon airport at 8:30 am on April 3rd to Frankfurt, Germany via Moscow, Russia and Vienna on the flight number OZ795 (B747).

It is the first time Asiana Airlines has resumed cargo shipments of lithium-ion batteries since the cargo plane crashed in July 2011. At the time, Asiana Airlines was flying with six flammable liquid hazards, including a lithium-ion battery, when a fire caused it to crash in the waters off Jeju Island.

The accident killed the two pilots (a captain and an officer). The Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board failed to identify the cause of the fire, but it concluded that dangerous substances in flammable liquids such as lithium-ion batteries and amine mixture, paint, and sensitizers were the cause of the fire.

An Asiana Airline official said, “We will reconfirm safety issues after doing trial transportations for three months until June.”
