SK Broadband will invest in an international submarine cable project to increase the stability of its network and expand its global business.

SK Broadband announced on the 5th of April that it will participate in the Southeast-Asia Japan Cable 2 (SJC2), an international submarine cable construction consortium that connects nine Asian countries including Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Korea and Japan.

The consortium consists of nine companies including SK Broadband, Singapore’s SingTel, China Mobile International, Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom, Cambodia’s Chuanwei, Japan’s KDDI, Thailand’s True Group, Vietnam’s VNPT, and Facebook.

The project connects 11 districts in 9 countries and has a total length of 10,500 km. It also uses the latest transmission technology and provides significantly higher transmission capacity than existing submarine cables. The project will be completed and begin commercial services in the first half of 2021.

By joining the consortium, SK Broadband will enable 360,000 subscribers to watch Ultra-High-Definition (25Mbps) videos all at the same time; it will also secure a cable capacity of 9 Terabits per second (Tbps), enough to stream 280 videos of 4 Gbytes a second.

The company said it will provide a foundation for smooth processing of broadband services such as AR-VR contents and 4K/8K UHD contents, which are expected to increase in traffic volume in the future.

SK Broadband plans to expand its global business not only by providing domestic and overseas customers with international leased line services, but also by providing one-stop services, which will connect its own IDC servers, international lines and domestic lines -- all at once.

SK Broadband said, “We will strengthen our competitiveness in the submarine cable business so that we can provide the best service to our global customers.”
