KT announced that it will develop a self-driving vehicle platform (5GaaVP: 5G as a Vehicle Platform) based on KT’s innovative 5G technology that was tested during the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games on the 18th.

When the ‘5G self-driving’ technology with the 4 core technologies is commercialized, vehicles-with-vehicles, vehicles-with-infrastructures will be connected at the same time, and risks can be prevented in advance.

KT’s four differentiation technologies include 5G infrastructure, 5G-V2X (Vehicle to Everything), precision positioning, and intelligent control systems.

KT will build a 5G network based on its experience in operating the Pyeongchang 5G pilot service, laying the foundation for autonomous driving platforms.

The nationwide coverage will be established in the 3.5Ghz band with wide radio coverage, and the faster 28Ghz band will be utilized in urban areas. In places where the 5G network is not yet established, it will provide seamless network services using the existing LTE networks.

In order to provide safe autonomous driving services for all situations, KT will complete total network coverage optimized for autonomous driving by utilizing 5G’s ‘Beam Tracking’ technology and ‘5G-LTE linked’ technology.

KT explained that with the 5G network, vehicles and transportation infrastructure will be connected to an ultra-low latency of 1~7ms (millisecond:1/1000 second), providing safer autonomous driving than the existing sensor autonomous driving system.

Furthermore, through the 5G ‘Network Slice (Virtual Split Network)’, it will provide a dedicated autonomous safety network to ensure the security and stability required for autonomous driving.

KT successfully conducted a 5G autonomous driving operation using three vehicles in Gangneung during the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, exchanging information during traffic signals with each vehicle for a safecompletion of the group drive.
