The Gachon Brain Health Center Wins JCI Accreditation

The Gachon Brain Health Center at Gachon University Gill Hospital was accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI), a US-based leading international evaluator of hospital quality. On March 24, Gachon University Gill Hospital announced that the Gachon Brain Health Center successfully passed JCI accreditation standards on February 12 of this year, and held a ceremony to celebrate its winning of the much-coveted JCI accreditation.

The JCI, the world's most renowned evaluator of hospital quality, puts under microscope all of the procedures and systems, ranging from the process of diagnosis and treatment, medical equipment, management of patients, infection control, facility maintenance, personnel training. Hence the winning of JCI accreditation means the recipient is capable of providing world-class medical services. As a result, medical circles around understand that JCI accreditation is extremely hard to get, as evidenced by the fact that only 300 hospitals in 40 nations were awarded JCI accreditation.

In South Korea, the Severance Hospital of the Yonsei University Health System and Korea University Hospital were accredited by the JCI, making the Gachon Brain Health Center the third recipient. The Gachon Brain Health Center is the first brain health center to win the JCI accreditation in the world. In other words, the Gachon Brain Health Center's medical prowess has been acknowledged as the world's best.

JCI Accreditation definitely gives the Gachon Brain Health Center a competitive edge in attracting patients- both Korean and foreign. In particular, as the newly-constructed Incheon Bridge makes the Gachon Brain Health Center about a 30-minute drive from Incheon International Airport. Therefore, by winning the JCI Accreditation is expected to give impetus to the Gachon Brain Health Center's efforts to become a global hub of brain health services in Northeast Asia.

The chairwoman of the Gachon Gill Foundation, Lee Gil-ya, carried out a bold investment plan, playing a pivotal role in the Gachon Brain Health Center's winning of JCI accreditation. In the face of naysayers, the chairwoman had the courage to take bold action to make investments to the tune of KRW 80 billion in establishing both the Gachon Brain Science Research Institute and the Gachon Brain Health Center. Placed in the basement of the Gachon Brain Science Research Institute that houses the Gachon Brain Health Center, a 7.0 Tesla MRI scanner has been used for experimental purposes; the results of experiments have been reflected in the process of diagnosis and treatment.

Chairwoman Lee said, "I jumped into the realm of brain research like I set foot in uncharted territory. The Gachon Brain Science Research Institute and the Gachon Brain Health Center have been significantly contributing to unraveling the mysteries of the brain and laying out a new blueprint for the prevention and treatment of brain diseases."

Thus, it is one of the world's best brain health centers, specializing in treating brain diseases such as dementia, strokes, brain cancer and Parkinson's disease.
