POSCO ICT plans to actively establish Smart Power Plants by utilizing Big Data analysis technologies.
POSCO ICT (CEO Choi Doo-hwan) announced on May 8th that they will work with POSCO Energy to establish a smart power plant to check and manage the performance and conditions of power plants in real time.
Since last year, the company has been concentrating on discovering new businesses by expanding smart factory technologies and experiences to smart cities, buildings, and smart energy fields. Among these projects, the company is pursuing projects that integrate ICT technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data and the Internet of Things (IoT), targeting the 5th and 9th Incheon LNG combined power plants and the secondary plants at Pohang and Gwangyang, which are operated by POSCO Energy.
It collects real-time data such as temperature, vibration and pressure at major facilities such as generators, turbines, pumps, and motors, which are the main facilities of the power plants, and analyze them with big data and derive insights. In this case, it is possible to predict optimal maintenance timing by checking the conditions of major facilities in real-time and early identification of abnormal symptoms.
POSCO ICT has already obtained the results of their analysis of the factors affecting the operation performance of the gas turbine and steam turbine at the power plant to derive optimum operating conditions for power generation efficiency. It is also planning to apply AI to determine optimal operating conditions by facility and maximize its competitive edge in operations by managing entire facilities through Deep Learning.
An official of POSCO ICT said, “POSCO plans to expand its overseas smart power plant business, starting with the power plant operated by POSCO Energy. We will also provide ‘smart X’ solutions that can be applied to various industrial areas such as smart management and will continue to secure it.”
