“Oracle should treat their workers as human, not tools.” Oracle Korea’s labor union launched a general strike on May 16th demanding improvement on unfair working conditions.
The Oracle Korea’s labor union, which was formed last October, has been undertaking various activities to improve the treatment of its employees. As an extension of this, from May 9th to the 11th, the labor union held a labor contest vote, receiving a favorable vote of 96 percent with a participation rate of 82.5 percent.
The Oracle Korea’s labor union announced a boycott about CSM, a system IT event scheduled on the 14th and instructed union members not to attend. Furthermore, on May 16th, the union staged a general strike rally at the ASEM Tower, where the Oracle Korea headquarters is located, and also in the Yongsan Station Railway Hall auditorium.
The labor union called for an improvement in the unreasonable wage system, especially for Oracle Korea employees. Oracle Korea offers incentives based on sales performance and is fixed on the annual salary at the time of joining the company regardless of the years of service, which results in unfair treatment for employees with more than ten years of service. Oracle’s recent decline in the DB markets has further accelerated this problem.
However, Oracle Korea has not responded yet to the labor union’s full strike declaration. It also cancelled the ‘Autonomic Operation Database Cloud’ reporter meeting scheduled for May 17th. In response, the labor union decided to hold a meeting on the 17th in the afternoon to extend the general strike indefinitely.
“The salaries of employees have not risen for a long time; in contrast, work has become more intenseeach day. Oracle Korea should not treat workers as tools but as human beings. We will contribute to change the ecosystem of the Korean IT industry as well as Oracle Korea,” the union said in a statement.
