SK Telecom will be able to provide media services without large-scale equipment. The initial investment cost of small and medium-sized media companies will decrease, and South Korean media companies seeking to enter overseas markets will be less burdensome.
SK Telecom made an announcement on July 31st that it has completed the development of Cloud Online Video Platform (Cloud OVP) and will promote technology standardization and global media business at the same time.
Cloud OVP, developed by SK Telecom, is a platform that can provide services without separately installing various equipment such as encoders (video compression), transcoders (content conversion), and streamer (streaming) required for media services.
The advantage of SK Telecom’s Cloud OVP is that it can easily provide media services using any company’s cloud services.
A variety of companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Google provide Cloud services, but they have adjusted their contents according to each cloud service company’s API. Interoperability measures between other cloud services were also needed.
However, if SK Telecom’s Cloud OVP technology is used, media OTT broadcasting company e-learning providers can offer their contents from various cloud companies without additional interworking.
SK Telecom will launch its first commercialization of OTT operators who are planning to enter Southeast Asia by the end of this year.
“By providing cloud-based media services, the market will become more active and operators will be able to advance overseas. We plan to lead the cloud OVP global standardization and expand the Cloud OVP ecosystem,” said Lee Jong-min, Director of SK Telecom’s Media Technology.
