KT has been selected as a consultant for the Chilean backbone network construction project based on its experience of building national backbone networks in Rwanda and Myanmar.

KT has been selected as a consultant for the Chilean backbone network construction project based on its experience of building national backbone networks in Rwanda and Myanmar. Furthermore, KT also agreed to find additional opportunities for cooperation such as 5G and IoT in Chile.

KT announced on August 27th that it had signed a contract with CTR, the company responsible for Chile’s backbone subsea cable business, for a ‘strategic agreement for finding future opportunities for cooperation.’

Chile’s subsea cable construction project was ordered by Chile’s subsea Information and Communication Agency (SUBTEL) in 2017 to secure a backbone network for preparing next-generation networks. The project will cost 90 million dollars and will be done by CTR.

The subsea cable will be constructed along the coastline from approximately 3,000 km from Puerto Montt in central South Chile to Puerto Williams on the southernmost tip.

KT plans to contribute to the successful construction and operation of the Chilean national backbone network. Furthermore, it has agreed to establish a cooperative business with PSINet, which is a parent company of CTR, to explore opportunities for cooperation in various fields such as 5G, IoT, Smart city, and self-driving cars.

KT explained that this selection of consultants has played a leading role in the subsea cable business of global consortiums such as APG (Asia Pacific Gateway) and NCP (New Cross Pacific) and KT Survey Marine.

“The national backbone network project is not only important in terms of accessibility of information but also in terms of regional economic development, and we expect KT to play a key role in the success of the project. We appreciate our collaboration with KT, which has the world’s highest technology and business capabilities, and hope to develop into a long-term partnership,” said Ivan Manuel Rodriguez, CEO of PSINest.

“KT has been actively pursuing the American market by demonstrating IoT technology to Brazil’s National Telecommunication Research Institute after last year supplying Giga wire to Boston. I will expand cooperation in the whole ICT such as 5G and IoT in Chile starting from this project,” said Oh Sung-mook, CEO of KT’s Network Division.
