The Public Criminal Investigation Department of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office said on Sept. 6 that Lee Sang-hoon, head of Samsung Electronics board of directors, appeared as a suspect at 10 a.m. on the date for questioning over alleged involvement in the scheme to sabotage labor union activities at one of its subsidiaries.

While appearing at the prosecutor's office, Lee refused to answer questions from reporters.
Prosecutors questioned the chairman Lee over alleged involvement in the scheme to hamper labor union activities at its after-sales services unit.

The chairman is accused of engaging in an organized plan to sabotage labor union efforts by Samsung Electronics Service employees in 2013. Lee was the head of the  firm's management department when the labor union was being established.

Prosecutors have questioned at least several Samsung officials over their alleged roles in the scheme, including a former vice president of Samsung Group's now-disbanded decision-making body, the Future Strategy Office.

On Aug. 20, they also raided Samsung Economic Research Institute, which is closely connected with the Future Strategy Office, and focused on investigating whether Samsung Group was involved in the manipulation of its labor union.

Prosecutors believe Samsung's top management was involved in the efforts to block labor union moves and to eventually aim for toppling the group. Samsung is known for its "labor union-free" policy.

Prosecutors are also investigating the involvement of high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Employment and Labor in 2013 to help Samsung Electronics Service, which was suspected of illegally dispatching workers. The prosecution completed an investigation into some of the officials working for the Ministry of Employment and Labor at the time.
