It has been confirmed that the father of Yeom Ho-suk, the late head of the Yangsan Center Branch, who took his own life in protest against Samsung Electronics Service's crackdown on labor union, has been put to trial, the Seoul Shinmun reported.
According to the newspaper on Sept. 19, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office indicted the father of Yeom's father, on charges of perjury. A broker involved in the process was also indicted. Earlier, the prosecution requested an arrest warrant for them, but all of them were rejected and have been investigating without detention.
The younger Yeom, who was in conflict with the management while working with the labor union, killed himself in May 2014 by saying, "If you find a body, you must rest until the branch wins." The union wanted to take over the union leader at Yeom's wishes, but the dispute broke out when his father, Yeom, suddenly changed his position to hold a family funeral.
Prosecutors suspect that Samsung handed over 600 million won to Yeom, his father, to hold a family funeral right after his death. According to the labor union, Yeom, the father of the union, said, "My son is dead, and I have to be paid for the death." While the union members persuaded the father who wanted to hold a family funeral, the police sent around 300 people to the funeral room and took away Yeom's body.
In the process, Na Doo-sik, chairman of Samsung Electronics Service branch, was indicted on charges of obstruction of funerals and special public affairs, and was sentenced to one and a half years in prison by the Supreme Court and given a two-year suspended sentence.
Prosecutors judged that the father committed perjury, saying "I had never met with a Samsung official or received any money at the court."
