Call on the labor ministry to punish Hyundai, Kia officials and order direct employment.

Non-regular workers at Hyundai and Kia Motors, who had staged sit-ins at the Seoul Regional Employment and Labor Administration, declared a hunger strike on Sept. 22, the first day of the Chuseok holiday, calling for punishment of Hyundai and Kia officials related to dispatch of illegal workers and direct employment of non-regular workers.

The non-regular workers' council held a rally at the 4th floor of the Seoul Employment and Labor Administration in central Seoul at noon on the same day and called for punishment of the heads of Hyundai and Kia conglomerates.

Previously, they had continued stay-in strike at the Seoul labor administration, asserting that Kia`s hiring of 1,300 additional in-house subcontract workers and Hyundai Motor`s hiring of 3,500 in-house subcontract workers are an attempt to cover up illegal dispatch.

Some 60 non-regular workers wearing white mourning clothes and fasting on the third day of the protest shouted, "Punish Hyundai Motor Chairman Chung Mong-koo, the criminal of illegal dispatch." They also called on the Ministry of Employment and Labor to order the direct employment of non-regular workers to the companies.

Kim Soo-eok, head of Hyundai and Kia Motors` non-regular workers’ council branch, explained why they started fasting before Chuseok, saying, "Hyundai and Kia Motors have committed illegal dispatch for 14 years and the labor ministry, the prosecution and the court have looked on with folded arms.”

Kim said, "The Supreme Court's ruling and the lower court's ruling revealed that Hyundai and Kia engaged in illegal dispatch, and that the government neglected the case for a long time and there was the investigation result of the Employment and Labor Administration Reform Committee that the prosecution unduly conducted an investigation. Nevertheless, the Ministry of Employment and Labor has not implemented any recommendations for more than two months.”
