Hanwha Group Chairman Kim Seung-yeon had a dinner with Edwin J. Feulner Jr., chairman of the U.S. Heritage Foundation's Asia Research Center, at a hotel in Seoul on Oct. 12.

During the two-hour session, Chairman Kim and Chairman Feulner shared their views on major pending political and economic issues such as the Korea-U.S. alliance, the establishment of a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula, the situation of neighboring countries, and the U.S.-China trade war and Korea-U.S. FTA revision.

Chairman Kim stressed, "The Korea-U.S. alliance should continue to be strengthened and the two countries should sustain the alliance, as it played a major role in bringing North Korea into the negotiating table with the international community."

Kim asked Chairman Feulner, "Please continue to play a lot of roles to help bring about peace on the Korean Peninsula through your long experience and knowledge and personnel networks."

In response, Feulner said, "The Korea-U.S. alliance has been the basis for successful nuclear negotiations with North Korea. Close cooperation between Seoul and Washington is important.

Regarding the second North Korea-U.S. summit, he replied, "The second round of talks is expected to take place after the U.S. midterm elections, and it seems necessary to prepare for a successful outcome."

In addition, Chairman Kim and Chairman Feulner shared various opinions on ways to promote bilateral trade and economic development.

Since the early 1980s, the two chairmen have maintained regular meetings with each other, keeping a private diplomatic partnership and discussing pending issues, including international economic and political order.

In 2011, the Heritage Foundation recognized Kim's contribution to private diplomacy in Korea and the U.S. and named the conference center on the second floor of the Heritage Building  in Washington as the "Kim Seung-yeon conference center."
