KT announced that it was awarded the 5G Leadership Award and the Best Leaders award at World Communication Awards (WCA) and 'WBA Industry Awards 2018', which were held in London on October 31.
WCA, which marks its 20th anniversary this year, is an award ceremony hosted by Total Telecom, a global ICT research organization.
The WCA annually selects companies that have achieved outstanding performance in brand and marketing as well as network technology.
This year, it selected the world's top companies in 25 categories including 5G, AI, Enterprise, Marketing, and IoT, and this is the first time for a Korean business to win a World Communications Award.
In preparation for world's first 5G service at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, KT received the 5G leadership award by advancing the global 5G standardization that it created with its global partners.
KT is currently accelerating preparation of NSA (non-standalone) based 5G service.
The company is also working on developing 5G ecosystem through '5G Open Lab' operation while applying virtualization technology, which is the core of the fourth industrial revolution, to 5G.
In addition, KT is participating in network infrastructure expansion projects such as opening public Wi-Fi for the first time in Cambodia and installing gigabit Wi-Fi networks throughout cities including public places.
The company is spreading Wi-Fi technology to developing countries in Asia such as establishment of 'Giga Island' in Bangkok.
"KT will continue to develop and provide 5G innovative technology and next-generation Wi-Fi technology and lead domestic and foreign wireless telecommunication businesses," said Lee Soo-gil, head of KT`s network research and technology support team.
Meanwhile, KT also won the Best Operator Deployment at the WBA Industry Award held in London on the same day, winning the honor for the fourth consecutive year.
