Hyundai Group Chairman Hyun Jeong-eun will push for a visit to North Korea for the third time this year. According to Hyundai Group, Chairman Hyun submitted an application to the Unification Ministry on Oct. 31 for a private contact with North Korea to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Mount Geumgang tour on Dec. 18.
After consulting with the Unification Ministry, Hyundai Group plans to hold consultations with the North side through the joint liaison office in Gaeseong.
If the ministry approves the visit, Hyun will make her third visit this year alone. In August, Hyun visited Mt. Geumgang to attend a memorial service for the 15th anniversary of the late former Chairman Chung Mong-hun.
The memorial service for former Chairman Chung at Mt. Geumgang resumed three years after the suspension of inter-Korean relations in 2015. Hyundai Group's North Korea project is a long-cherished project of Chung Joo-young, the late Hyundai Group founder and honorary chairman. In 1998, Chung Ju-young opened the door for inter-Korean economic cooperation by visiting North Korea two times.
However, the tour was completely suspended in July 2008 after a South Korean tourist was shot to death at Mt. Geumgang.
