Samsung Electronics introduced a display for foldable smartphones that will be 4.6-inch when folded and 7.3-inch when expanded at 'Samsung Developers' 2018' held in San Francisco on Nov. 7.

"We are going to release at least 1 million foldable phones in the first half of next year. Samsung Electronics introduced a display for foldable smartphones that will be 4.6-inch when folded and 7.3-inch when expanded at 'Samsung Developers' 2018' held in San Francisco on Nov. 7. Foreign media evaluated the product as “the future of smartphones” and “new innovations have emerged in the smartphone market.”

"Disclosure of the display indicates that Samsung Electronics is able to mass-produce foldable smartphones." said CEO Ko. "We will make foldable phones as new premium products that introduce fresh products every year just like Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series."

Samsung Electronics is known to release its first foldable smartphone called Galaxy F (tentative name) at CES 2019 in Las Vegas in January next year or Mobile World Congress (M) in Barcelona, Spain in February.

Koh predicted that 5G communication, which is about to be commercialized early next year, will be a new breakthrough in the smartphone market that is in a stagnant period.

"The actual schedule for commercialization of 5G equipment has been pushed forward by nine months compared to when telecommunication businesses from around the world are talking about schedules to increase supply of 5G equipment a year and a half ago," he said.

“When the 5G era is opened, which allows data transmission at a faster pace than now, new technologies such as IoT, artificial intelligence and augmented reality are fully implemented, and the smartphone market will take a new leap forward,” he added.
