Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has been recognized for the first time in the world for its cyber security technology on super- large ships. HHI recently acquired Cyber Security Ready (CSR) for VLCC (Very Large Crude Oil Carrier) from the U.S.-based American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). It said it will deliver the vessel to an owner in Europe at the end of this month.
The HHI certification is a security technology that enhanced ship safety by protecting major control systems from cyber security threats inside and outside of vessels. The bureau in late October thoroughly verified the cyber security status of major control and communication systems in the ship.
As ICT (Information Communication Technology) has been integrated into ship operating technology recently, it is emphasizing the need for security to protect ship systems and data from outside cyber attacks such as hacking.
Paul R. Walters, head of global cyber security at the ABS, said, "HHS has been able to provide ships with better security to ship owners as its cyber security technologies have been recognized globally."
