Labor ministry moves to send its supervision results to prosecution

According to the special supervision of Samsung Electronics' Giheung Business Site, which caused three deaths due to the leakage of carbon dioxide, 936 cases of illegal acts were found. Some predict that criminal punishment for executives and employees of Samsung Electronics will be inevitable.

The report submitted by the Ministry of Employment and Labor to Rep. Seol Hoon of the ruling Democratic Party of Korea, some 777 safety issues and 159 health problems were pointed out, including 125 cases of insufficient steps to prevent toxic substances, 209 cases of lack of access control, and 131 cases of prevention of explosions or fires.

The special supervision was launched in five years against the Giheung workplace and 82 partner companies in the wake of the carbon dioxide leakage in September. A total of 1,698 cases of violation of the Industrial Safety and Health Act, including 936 cases of judicial actions, 682 cases of fines, and 80 cases of recommendation, were detected.

The Ministry of Labor announced that it will impose a total of 1.3 billion won in fines, including 514.8 million won on Samsung Electronics and 818.0 million won on partner companies, and send the results of the supervision to the prosecution.

"As the results of the surveillance are expected to be sent to the prosecution soon, criminal punishment for Samsung executives and employees seems to be inevitable. With this occasion, Samsung Electronics should prepare fundamental measures against repeated safety accidents," said Rep. Seol Hoon.

Meanwhile, the accident at Giheung workplace occurred on Sept. 4 in the hallway next to the CO2 concentration office on the first floor of the 6-3 line. Two workers were killed and one injured as carbon dioxide leaked from the accident.
