Victims of humidifier sterilizers filed another complaint with the prosecution against SK Chemicals (currently SK Discovery) and Aekyung Co. that developed and distributed disinfectants.
The humidifier sterilizer disaster prevention network filed a complaint with the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office on Nov. 27, calling for investigation into 14 former and current CEOs of SK Discovery and Aekyung.
SK Chemicals developed chloromethylisothiazolinone (CMIT) and methylisothiazolinone (MIT), which are ingredients of humidifier sterilizers, and Aekyung manufactured Humidifier Mate by using it for sales.
Victims of humidifier sterilizers filed a complaint with the prosecution in 2016, claiming that the companies were suspected of professional negligence and gross negligence.
The investigation into SK Chemicals and Aekyung that used CMIT and MIT as raw materials has been suspended due to insufficient evidence.
The network criticized saying, “The prosecution has not moved at all since the accusation against SK Chemicals and Aekyung. And prosecutors and the Fair Trade Commission (FTC) made an excuse that CMIT and MIT products were not identified as harmful to humans.”
It asserted, “Several studies and data indicate that CMIT and MIT, another sources of humidifier sterilizers, are also responsible for the disaster.”
