On May 13, 2010, Bharatsinh Solanki, the Minster of State for Power in India, visited the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) in Changwon, Korea to discuss the technical cooperation of test certifications and smart grids between KERI and the Central Power Research Institute in India (CPRI).

About 20 delegates including Solanki and representatives from CPRI were invited. They were introduced with the test certification service and they toured the High-Voltage and High Power building.

As CPRI is pursuing the modernization for a test certified facility, Minister Solranki expects that KERI could provide CPRI with the highest level of certification testing equipment and technical know-how. CPRI has recently invested extra for improvements to the facility and has shown great interest in new testing equipment, including the 4000 MVA-class.  The 4000 MVA-class is the ongoing testing facilities for certification services to respond to a request faster. Meanwhile, the requests from the domestic and international area are rapidly increasing.

Solranki stated, "Currently, a lot of power equipment from China are primarily being imported to India. In the future, we would like to have Korean power equipment products which maintain high performance." He continued by saying, "The smart grid study is emerging all over the world and KERI is also participating in research for the development of the smart grid. We wish to promote a MOU between CPRI and KERI for the cooperation of research."

Also he insinuated their intention to take the smart grid as an agenda item to the G20 summit which will be held in November in Korea.

Along with the introduction of the test certification service, Kim Maeng-hyeon, Executive Director of KERI, also stated, "Currently KERI has been providing testing services to foreign agents such as India, Japan, Thailand, and Taiwan.  India's leading companies are also our top clients, including Vijai Electricals Ltd. and Crompton Greaves Ltd. KERI earned approximately 1.3 million Euros for overseas test in 2009, while India has become one of the important markets to KERI."

CPRI and KERI seek for cooperation
In addition, Kim Yong-Soo, Vice President of KERI stated, "For Korean firms to enter the India market, the test service contract between CPRI and KERI should be carried out mutually, and hopefully we can have a full-fledged discussion about the agreement during the G20 summit." He added, "If CPRI needs any constructive help for a new test facility, KERI is willing to help as a prior construction institute. And we hope to maintain a friendly working relationship between the two organizations."
