Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) said on Dec. 3 that it received the certification of smart ship technology for regulation of carbon dioxide emissions from ABS, a leading ship classification organization in the U.S., for the first time in the domestic industry.
The technology, which is applied to SHI's smart ship solution "INTELIMAN Ship," automatically records the location and time of departure and arrival ports and monitors the usage of fuel and quantity of carbon dioxide emissions in real time. It also generates accurate flight reports using accumulated data.
As a result, the company explained that there were no human errors due to the preparation of the handcrafts, and that the reliability of the data was high, maximizing the ship operation efficiency.
Since 2016, the company has been developing smart ship technology to respond to new environmental regulations. Currently, it has decided to apply this technology to about 50 LNG carriers and large container vessels.
"We have verified that SHI's smart ship solution is a useful technology for EU and IMO's sailing regulations. We will be able to provide both environmental regulatory response and operational efficiency improvements to shipowners," said Kim Jin-ki, a business representative of ABS Korea.
Meanwhile, SHI acquired the world's first ever cyber security technology certification for its smart ship solution "INTELIMAN Ship" from the ABS in March last year and additionally won the strengthened cyber security certification from the British Lloyd's Register (LR) in November.
