Hyundai Mipo Dockyard has succeeded in winning an order for a small and medium LNG carrier from overseas, entering the LNG carrier market in earnest.

The company said on Dec. 6 that it has signed a contract with Knutsen of Norway to build a 30,000 ㎥-class LNG carrier worth $77 million. As the contract includes one option for the same vessel, additional order is expected in the future.

The vessel, which is 180 meters long, 28.4 meters wide, and 19.4 meters high, will be delivered in the first quarter of 2021. It will be operated to supply LNG to Sardinia Island in Italy.

In particular, the carrier is equipped with a dual fuel propulsion system that can use natural gas during operation as fuel, and a shaft generator that can produce and supply electricity through propulsion engines, thereby meeting stricter environmental regulations while also increasing operational efficiency.

"We have been building trust by signing contracts for many large LNG carriers with Hyundai Heavy Industries Group. Based on this, we issued an order for the small and medium LNG carrier to Hyundai Mipo Dockyard," said a source from Knutsen, the shipowner.

The LNG carrier market has been formed around large ships of more than 160,000 cubic meters, but interest in small and medium LNG carriers has been increasing due to the rising demand for LNG, an eco-friendly fuel, and the expansion of LNG bunkering infrastructure.
