SK Telecom is going to introduce mobile edge computing technology to 5G while joining hands with Deutsche Telekom.
It is going to reduce speed of delay of 5G and speed of ultra-high-capacity telecommunication.
SK Telecom announced on December 13 that it has signed a "5G Mobile Edge Computing Collaboration MoU" with MobiledgeX, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom.
Mobile edge computing is a technology that installs data centers or solutions that are physically close to customers and provides services. SK Telecom is planning to install a small 5G data center in base stations.
SK Telecom is planning to install a small 5G data center in base stations or exchanges.
Because data can be processed immediately in a data center that is in contact with customers, service latency can be reduced.
Utilization of mobile edge computing technologies is high in next-generation industries such as self-driving, robot for responding to disasters, large-capacity cloud games, and AR/ VR. It can also be used for B2B business models such as 5G Smart Factory.
Both companies have decided to jointly develop core technologies, link platforms, expand ecosystems, and develop business models regarding mobile edge computing.
"We will continue to innovate to provide differentiated 5G services to our customers." said Director Park Jong-kwan of SK Telecom's Network Technology Institute.
