LG Uplus and Hanyang University are testing remote control of self-driving cars using 5G network.

LG Uplus announced on December 18 that it and Hanyang University's Automotive and Electronic Control Research Laboratory (ACE Lab) have succeeded in proving self-driving cars that use 5G network at Seoul's high-speed roads.

The self-driving car developed by LG Uplus and Hanyang University drove for 25 minutes a distance of about 7km from Seoul Forest, Gangbyeon Expressway, Seongsu Bridge, Olympic Road, and Yeongdong Bridge.

It demonstrated real-time monitoring of driving images, self-driving control, and watching 5G media while driving.
Control of self-driving cars was carried out through 5G network by avoiding obstacles and changing paths.

This self-driving car introduced a viewing environment of 5G media while driving. Drivers and passengers used mass video contents in real time without delay or loading.

"5G self-driving cars will solve social problems such as traffic jams and traffic accidents and contribute greatly to traffic safety." said Sun Woo-myung-ho, a professor of futuristic automotive engineering at Hanyang University.

"We will focus more on developing self-driving technologies through convergence between telecommunication and automotive industries in the future," said Kang Jong-oh of LG Uplus.
