Dongwon Industries has achieved $200 million in exports in the marine products sector this year. The company was awarded a 200 million dollar export credit for Korea's biggest export success in the marine product field at the 2017 Export Promotion Ceremony hosted by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Seoul on Dec. 20.
The event was attended by officials from the domestic fisheries industry and the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry, including Dongwon Industrial President Lee Myung-woo.
Dongwon Industries achieved a total of 218.24 million U.S. dollars in fishery exports for one year from July 2017 to June 2018. It is 13.1% growth compared to exports for the same period last year.
This is largely attributable to its efforts for strengthening fishing competitiveness through the modernization of the fleet, a company official said. Dongwon Industries recently built a state-of-the-art ship capable of producing high value-added tuna and set sail with special cooling facilities. Two more of the latest ships will be built and set sail next year.
Based on the world's largest tuna fleet, Dongwon Industries is the largest fishing company that hunts bonitos that are used in products such as tuna cans and tuna fish. It is exporting goods to 35 countries, including Japan and Thailand.
"Our company started out with one deep-sea fishing vessel in 1969 and has grown at the fast pace. As the global competition in the fishing industry is intensifying, we will continue to strengthen our competitiveness and take the lead in restoring our status as a strong ocean power,” said President Lee.
