IASP 2010

Many of Korea's technology advances are created by marriage of research and development (R & D) and business, within science parks.  As hosts of this year's International Association of Science Parks (IASP) conference, Korea will showcase its own and international academic and commercial advances in green technology and green technology management in Daejeon, beginning 23rd May to 26 May, 2010.  The focus of the conference and exhibition in Daejeon's Daedeok Innopolis, opened in 1973, is science parks through the lens of 'Green Growth.'

What many don't realise is that 'Green Growth' is actually a solution seen by analysts of the United Nations (UN) Millenium Development Goals (MDGs).  The solution is for the antagonism that analysts of the MDGs saw that was potentially created by the two MDGs of poverty reduction and environmental sustainability, namely how to create wealth, jobs and growth without causing environmental damage.  Green Growth in the frame of technology advancement is a field of excellence in Korea. For example, it is possible to visit Korea's government Blue House and make a mini energy audit of the building as the Blue House is 'Smartgrid' wired to Byucksan Power Co's Energle interface and energy analysis system.

Kang, Gye-doo, President of Daedeok Innopolis

The Daedeok Innopolis IASP conference boasts prestigious and famed invited speakers from Korea and around the world to discuss and reframe science parks within the principles of the standards of excellence in Green Growth.  Robert Grubbs who received the Nobel prize for chemistry in 2005, Joan Bellavista the President of the IASP, Suh, Nam-pyo the president of the KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), Kang, Gye-doo the President of Daedok Innopolis and Luis Sanz the Director General of the IASP will open the conference proceedings.  The opening of the event also features an address by Achim Steiner, the Director General of the United Nations Environment Program.  Yet the scale and urgency of Green Growth has not been without its critics, famed anti-hero of virally created 'it's an emergency,' views and ill conceived or contrived statistics on environmental damage, Bjorn Lomborg, will be in attendance in the first half of the conference to ally the sceptical. The opening of the conference is the signing of the Daedeok declaration, an agreement to embrace Green Growth as well as cooperate in business and business functions.  The conference and exhibition will also be attended by prototype creators, businesses with fully commercialised Green Tech, buyers and professionals with a vested interest in science park policy, management and growth.

Segmented into five categories, the exhibition itself showcases the broader themes of IASP, namely Green Tech, in terms of Daedeok Innopolis research and development (R & D) outcomes, other R & D, Green Tech parks from around the world, select Green Tech businesses and forthcoming exhibitions.  A total of 100 companies will attend the exhibition and at least 2,000 experts, CEOs and buyers are registered for the event.

Daedeok Innopolis

In the main theme zone, attendees are invited to experience a taste of the IASP Copenhagen conference slated for 2011.  The 2011 conference is intended to be future orientated.  The IASP, organizers of the conference and exhibition combination, will be in attendance in the main theme zone along with Daejeon City and Daedeok Innopolis management.  Those impressed with the outcomes, comprising an entire section of technology, of Daedeok Innopolis will be able to learn how Daejeon City achieved their successes and learn more about the model of the Daedeok Innopolis park.  The government's smartgrid test bed initiative owners, the Korea Smartgrid Institute, will also be available so that international visitors can learn more about the goal and strategy of Korea's  low carbon, green growth vision.

The main theme zone is also supported by a special area dedicated to visitor review of the Daedeok Innopolis R & D outcomes.  Eight booths will showcase simulators, e-paper, ipad display drivers, gene synthesis and diagnostic equipment, transportation innovations and devices to measure brainwaves.  Much of the innovations on display are of interest to scientists as well as those seeking to invest in commercialization of the outcomes.

The Green STP (Science Technology Park) area is host to visitors from Berlin, China, Saudi Arabia, Jeju Island in Korea and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as well as the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology from the Korean government.  The Korean government are in attendance in order to share the goals and some of the outcomes of the National Scientific Research Park Association (NSRPA).  NSRPA is of interest to visitors from government, academia, industry and institutions as one of the organization's main approaches is to integrate professionals from these areas and network internationally.  China's attendance is to showcase transportation R & D for which the Beijing University of Technology has become adept at.  Masdar, Abu Dhabi, leaders in renewable energy and low carbon solutions founded from R & D are one of the middle eastern representatives in attendance.  Riyadh Techno valley from Saudi Arabia will also be present to showcase some of their outcomes.

The Green Tech R & D area houses major Korean organizations and Academic organizations tasked with driving the R & D growth of Green Tech in Korea.  In addition, the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) will be displaying a model of the space rocket to be launched from Daejeon on June 9th, 2010.  The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science are attending to promote their exchange programs and international projects.  Most of the organizations in the R & D area will also display their signature outcome projects.  One such project is the counterfeit money detector from Yuil Banking and Security.  The diverse products and associations attending the Green Tech R & D exhibition will appeal to security experts, academics, heads of industry, leaders of technology departments in research institutes and businesses seeking to reduce their carbon debt.

BM Biotechnology Laboratory CO.,LTD. Product

Twenty five businesses form the Green Tech business area of the exhibition.  Many of the booths house Korean star innovators, though companies from China are also in attendance.  The exhibitors will show products that create renewable energy, environmentally friendly energy and fusion energy.  Many of the fully commercialized products hail from R & D experimentation and the inclusion of this section is a testament to the efforts of these companies and their supporting governments in their execution of sustainable technology strategies and policies.  The exhibition runs from 10am until 6pm daily from the 24th May to 26 May, 2010.
